ART and SCIENCE, two ways of perceiving the world

By Anne-Marie Pochat-Le Roy

Science produces theories and concepts which provide us tools to explain the world and control it. From our human point of view.

The artworks display a psychic perception of the world which cannot be defined without to be reduced. I cannot be satisfied in my perception of the universe if I don’t blend well in my consciousness the scientific informations and those from the artist’s intuition.

Science data seem to me, beyond all the dimensions and extraordinary movements of the matter it discovered, static. I imagine them like a treasure growing in a bank but unable to solve the economic problems by itself. It is quite the same for theories and experiments; they won’t allow our brain limited by its own matter, structure, and physiological organization to figure out the universe.

We are the center of our experiments and of the sphere of our limits. We have to admit our descriptions of the world will never be objective as we are inside this world. Descriptions could pile up along the radius of this sphere of observations, and lead to fill it, but each radius is looked horizontal.

The artist’s perception produces snapshots of the mysteries of the universe; they are real as we look at them; a time later they could have disappear, hidden to our attention. They escape from the horizontal radius of the intellectual learning; they entitle us to foresee an unusual archetype of knowledge.

Science creates an architecture of the world, it makes a balance building allowing it to work, in its euclidien conquest of space. Artwork produces shapes but it never belongs to them, because its essence is freedom. It come from a flight of the soul outside of our regular space; it conquest the time. These are two entangled ways to touch on the reality.

Artwork derived from this particular perception of the space, from a vision beyond the senses. Artist transforms the matter, sculpts the space , interprets the universe and give it a sense. The full story of art can be sum up in this search of sense.

It is a vital need for the artist to understand his contemplations and feelings; this is the engine of his creation. But, more I increase my knowledges, more I enlarge my field of perceptions, deeper are my emotions and the need to create becomes pressing.

Art is not discursive; it is a posture of reception, assimilation and action on the matter to show a moment of harmony.

Through his research of lights, forms and forces, incarnations of his emotions, the painter transmutes the matter and conquests the Time.

The artwork is the product of a particular perception of the space, a vision beyond senses. The artist transforms the matter, sculpts the space, interprets the universe and gives it a sense.

All the history of art could come down this quest of sense. The artist has a vital need to search and find a sense to what he contemplates what he feels. This is the engine of creation, as knowledge is the engine of science. But more I increase my know ledges, more I extend my field of perceptions, more I enrich my emotions and more the need to create is pressing.

The way I think during the act of creation is neither analytic nor global; it is both. It links in its boost intellect and intuition: some concepts or allegories can be embodied in the work... Their pictorial definition will always have got an important part of unconscious and this is this unconscious/conscious which finalizes the work and balances the light, the shape, the global energy.

"Progress is the motor of science, the ideal is the generator of art" Victor Hugo
